As it’s almost impossible to not respond to the time of year in one way or another, In the Dark Times will see CMR become a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the high street and a potential antidote to the (for many) vulgar commercialism of Christmas with a show that digs deeper than the surface of kitsch fairy lights and tinsel and delves into the darker themes of Christmas past, the rituals of winter solstice and traces Christmas back to its mythical roots creating a show of wonder and surprise that is much more than just another Christmas exhibition.

Centennial activities celebrating the life and work of
composer, artist, author and thinker, John Cage (1912-1992).
To link with John Cage Centennial Year international celebrations,
CMR artist led space offered a cluster of short artist residencies to practitioners working in/across all art forms, interested in an opportunity for some serious play inspired by one of the most radical pioneers of twentieth century avant-garde culture.
Artists were invited to consider Cage’s legacy and its relevance in the present day, some 60 years since the first performance of the influential silent composition 4’33’’, and to respond individually and through dialogue with co-resident artists and other collaborators of their choice.
9 residencies were available over a 3 week period, with a fourth week ring fenced for discussion, selection & preparation of material for presentation over the final weekend.
The entire period of activity will span 4 weeks and 33 hours exactly, concluding at 7pm Sunday 14th October.

__CMR is an artist-led initiative designed to create a community of artists who will exhibit and flourish within this three storey building. It is a voluntary-run organisation and project. We aim to be all inclusive; we aim to encourage adventurous work that will respond and challenge not only to CMR’s various spaces but also the broader Contemporary Art landscape of Cornwall.
Want to be involved?
Membership is open to artists, makers, curators, writers and thinkers at all stages of their careers who are interested in developing a rigorous, critically engaged level of contemporary practice, and who are interested in actively contributing to help promote the overall well-being of the project.
